Entire System Backup
We have taken entire system backup using brms first time in our server{V5R4} which took 12 hrs to complete {ASP 70%} with some object locks.My question is how to reduce the time window using brms for entire system backup? which helps us to release the system to users early...

We scheduled the backup through : GO BRMS option 20 with console monitor concept.

Backup Type : sequential backup {not a parallel save}

Thanks in advance for the suggestion!!!!!!

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

12 hours seems a long time but this would depend upon how many terabyte you back up and your tape device. I have not used BRMS option 20 but for a full system backup simply put the server into a restricted state and from a command line run STRBKUBRM CTLGRP(*SYSTEM) SBMJOB(*NO) – this takes less than an 1.5 hours for us.

    which helps us to release the system to users early... The fastest way is not to do a full system save. Generally, a full system save might only be done once or twice a year. There is seldom a good reason to do it more often. Only back up what needs to be backed up. That's the way to end backups sooner. Note that smaller, faster systems might be capable of full system saves within acceptable time constraints. If it can be done without bothering other processes, there's nothing wrong with doing it. But why waste time when it's not needed? Tom

    Hi Cogit8, Our Total Storage is 12Tb. Where as 70% of ASP approximately - 8Tb. May i know how much is the total storage of yours? So that we can try to change the way of takiing backup?

    May i know how much is the total storage of yours? Knowing total storage might not help much. You also need to know how many objects there are and what their sizes are. It can take longer (and use more tape) to save ten small objects than to save a single large object. Also, the authority scheme that you apply to your objects can cause a save to take much longer than just saving the data, even if it doesn't take much space on tape. You need to know the overall environment before even knowing what questions to ask. Tom
