Amy, I just returned from the Enterprise 2.0 Conference in Boston and had a chance to see a number of demonstrations and hear about some great case studies. I wasn't alone -- several other editors and writers were present and documented what they learned.

Linda Tucci, for instance, wrote about how enterprise 2.0 is finding its way into big business, particularly at Wachovia, but focuses on external tools like LinkedIn or Facebook. Zach Church wrote that enterprise 2.0 way is on its way but hardly there, noting examples of wiki implementations at the CIA (Intellipedia) and Pfizer (Pfizerpedia).

One of the hits of the conference was the presentation on Unity, Lockheed-Martin’s implementation of a social computing platform. They used a combination of Google Enterprise Search, in the form of an appliance, Microsoft Sharepoint Server and Newsgator Enterprise Server, along with a year of customizing and fine-tuning the code.

If you're interested in blogs, take a look at Wordpress for internal use, or Wordpress MU (Multi-user). It's open source and has an entire ecosystem of plugins you can add.

If you're interested in wikis, MediaWiki, the software that runs WIkipedia, is also open source and can be adapted internally. Socialtext sells enterprise wiki software as well, along with a number of other vendors.

If you want to create forums and enable more social and collaborative use of your intranet, there are a number of vendors vying for your business. Some companies have chosen to simply use a private version of Facebook for their intranet, though not everyone is comfortable with that option, given compliance and archiving issues, along with moving internal discussions outside of the firewall. Take a look at what Jive, Mzinga, Small World Labs and Telligent have to offer, among others.

Internal RSS is a hot area as well. I recorded a video of Social Sites 2.0, Newsgator's enhancement of Sharepoint. Attensa and KnowNow also make enterprise RSS software that's worth evaluating.

I hope that helps!

Another example: In this article -- Call center relies on local talent, Web 2.0 technologies -- read about how internal chat and a wiki have helped optimize the call center at Partsearch, Inc. This Cisco customer is using wiki technology to maintain the knowledge base in its call center, allowing agents to organize and comment on information on the different brands and parts that the company offers.

An internal chat room at the same call center helps agents who are having difficulty locating a particular part. At least one senior service agent -- well versed in the company's catalogue and parts -- staffs the chat room, monitoring it for difficult questions.

Hope this helps!

Hi Amy,

On SearchCRM.com we have talked to a few companies who are using Web 2.0 technology like wikis and blogs internally. In this article -- Call center relies on local talent, Web 2.0 technologies -- read about Partsearch, a Cisco customer that uses wiki technology to maintain the knowledge base in its call center, allowing agents to organize and comment on information on the different brands and parts that the company offers.

In this article -- Marketers tapping into social networks -- learn how savvy marketers are embracing the technology by creating their own social networks instead of using existing ones to connect with customers. Marketing teams at organizations like The Indianapolis Colts, Nike, USA Network, and Coca-Cola are using networks to create camaraderie and buzz about their brand.

Hope this helps! Let me know what Web 2.0 technology you're considering in your organization.
