Q:
Encrypting fields in the AS/400
Greetings,

We are required to encrypt credit card fields in the AS/400 files. I am looking for something convenient to encrypt/decrypt field while in the RPG ILE program. Do we need to buy a software? Does As/400 has its own APIs? Please advise.

Thanks

and search on encryption. It will take you to the encryption API's.

However, this is a big, big topic, and you're going to need to do a lot of research outside of just the iSeries. If you decide to do it yourself, there are standards set by the credit card companies, and you need to be in compliance with them.

You don’t say anything about your system, e.g., how old it is. That makes it a little difficult to give some of the more useful possibilities.

However, numerous encryption/decryption options are available. The most basic might be the CIPHER MI instruction. Maybe the best option for you would be the encryption/decryption in SQL — if you have the SQL Development Kit installed and if you have a currently supported release.

We just purchased CRYPRO Complete from Linoma Software and are extremely pleased with the package. I looked into writing some of it myself. The ROI from this package is exceptional.
