EMC virtual storage for Power 7

EMC backup
The company I work for uses EMC for backups of all other servers in our company and wants to move our Power 7 (E4B - V7R1) backups off cartridge to virtual storage. My question is if you had to totally restore the Power 7 system can it be done from a virtual backup or would it still require a physical tape to at least restore the operating system? Also years ago when we considered this option, EMC was not keeping up with IBM releases. Has anyone else run into issues with this?

YES the EMC DD-VTL (virtual tape library) functions the same as the physical library and provides Save, Restore functions 100% the same and YES you can scratch load or D-IPL from this device. As far as keeping up with IBM release items, since 2006 EMC has a License agreement with IBM Rochester specific to the IBM i host.
