Our iSeries reached its storage threshold and since then email has stopped. I've reduced the disk usage way below the threshold. I've restarted MSF (*resume, *reset and *clear) and also started the TCP server *SMTP numerous times but to no avail. I keep getting the error message "Number of variable length records is not valid." from API QTMMSNDM - has anybody got any clues please?

What to Check When SMTP or POP3 Mail Does Not Work…

Check the following general things when mail is not flowing properly between any
of the supported mail POP3 clients on the AS/400 system:
. Client Access Host servers:
To start: STRHOSTSVR \ALL
QUSER and General Security Error
. Mail Server Framework:
To check: WRKACTJOB JOB(QMSF)
To start: STRMSF
. POP3 server:
To check: WRKACTJOB JOB(QTPO\)
To start: STRTCPSVR \POP
. SMTP server:
To check: WRKACTJOB JOB(QTSMTP\)
To start: STRTCPSVR \SMTP
. SMTP/MIME mail is not accepted when an AS/400 system has exceeded the
configured system storage threshold. This is to prevent an inflow of mail from
using up the entire system storage and causing it to fail.
To check if the current system ASP (auxiliary storage pool) is under the
system storage threshold limit:
DSPSYSSTS, upper right-hand corner of the screen
If you do not know what the storage threshold limit configured is, use the
following command and options:
– STRSST
– Option 3 (Work with disk units)
– Option 2 (Work with disk configuration)
– Option 3 (Work with ASP threshold)
The threshold used is for “ASP 1″. The current %Used is displayed to the far
right. If %Used exceeds the configured threshold limit, either storage on the
system has to be freed up or the threshold limit must be set higher than the
current %Used value. The threshold limit can be reset by selecting (Option
1=Select) ASP 1.
. POP3 or MAPI client receives “Unable to send mail message”:
Some mail client jobs may need to search the system distribution directory to
obtain recipient information and may receive the error An error of unexpected
or unknown origin has prevented the operation from completing while
attempting to search the directory.
Viewing the QTPOPABCH job log shows the MSGPCI9A9C message – Search
data does not exist.
This can be remedied by releasing all locks placed on the file
QUSRSYS/QAOKL03A (including QSNADS, QMSF, and QSERVER). Once
those locks are released, issue the following commands to rebuild the search
database:
CHGSYSDIRA ALWSCH(\NO)
CHGSYSDIRA ALWSCH(\YES)
By ending and restarting the search function, the corrupted file can be rebuilt.
. Missing QMSF exit programs:
There are several exit point programs for QMSF POP3 services. If for any
reason they are not found, mail is not delivered.
Use the following command to check the appropriate exit point:
WRKREGINF EXITPNT(QIBM_QZMFMSF_ADR_RSL)
Using option 8 allows you to work with the exit programs.
When this option is invoked, the following programs should be registered:
1ððð QZDSNPAD QSYS
13ðð QTMMADRS QTCP
2ððð QZMFSNPA QSYS
If the program QTMMADRS QTCP is not shown, that is an indication that the exit
programs required for SMTP/MIME (POP3 Server) support is not registered as part
of the TC1 product installation. Before trying to re-register these programs check,
to make sure the TC1 (TCP/IP Product) is installed on the AS/400 system.
To re-register the exit points once it has been determined that TCP/IP was installed
successfully, call the following program using this syntax:
CALL QTCP/QTMMSNAP
Otherwise, you must use option 8 with the following data to re-register the exit
points:
Exit point . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : QIBM_QZMFMSF_ADR_RSL

on the Work with Exit Programs display to re-register the exit point programs.

Please show how the API is being called. Is the error coming from one of the server jobs themselves or from an application that calls the API? Tom
