Ehternet adapter question.
Hey guys I got a question here. We have a laptop that has constant problem browsing the network, when i look at the properties for it i see that it is sending billions and sometimes trillions of packets and only recieving a few. I have tried reinstalling the driver for the network adapter and reinstalling all the network protocols, also i have flushed dns and renew the IP, tried repairing the connection, i see no processes that would be doing this. I have even tried a new latop shell just to see if it was a hardware problem and it was still sending billions of packets right when windows boots up. Any suggestions?

Can you move the laptop to anohter LAN drop? If the errors follow the laptop, the issue might be a failing NIC. Sometimes when you see an abnormal amount of traffic from an EU station, the NIC is failing. If the issue ends up following the drop, consider hooking up a sniffer to the port to see what is causing the traffic.

Try pinging a known good static IP. If you have XP, open the task manager and go to the networking tab. On the view enable the bytes sent and received. This will give you the true indication of the actual traffic. If you want to see any resends, you will have to utilize the performance monitor and set up a trace on the network interface card for any discards and/or errors. The traffic you see at startup could be authintication if you are on a Domain network. The laptop is trying to establish its identity on the Domain.
I can ping static IP’s no problem, and i have tried a different NIC, I do see the utilization jump when browsing the network and when i view the LAN connection status there is about 300 billion sent packets and 428 received!
Hook up a sniffer to the port and ascertain what kind of traffic is being sent, there may be a port scanning process scanning non-existent ip addresses which are subsequently timing out without replies. Being able to ping static ips suggest the card works well
at a guess and not knowing the hardware or setup i say you have a port scanner or packet sniffer timing out
how long does this go on for after the boot is finished is it doing it all the time or just a boot.
Actualy come to find out it was the driver all along, after updating to the newest NIC driver vai windows update. Also come to find out this was happenening on about 10 laptops and really lagging down the network. Issue resolved for now!
