IBM iSeries
Hi all
I am using Personal Communication iSeries access for Windows to connect AS/400. It is giving me error E890 (Automatic configuration failed or not allowed) when trying to connect. I searched this error on internet and I found this technote by IBM. I am the only one who is using server. QAUTOVRT value was initially set to 30 I changed it to 50 and my system start working and I get connected. After about 2 weeks same problem occur again I again change QAUTOVRT value to 100 and it started working. Now after about 1 week it is again having the same problem. Remember I am only using the server. What could be the reason. I checked iSeries Navigator is working well. Its shared drives are accessible. Only Emulator is not connecting... Thanks in advance

wrkdevd *VRTDSP   and wrkdevd *VRTPRT   I am guessing that if you count up the devices between the results of these two commands you will get 100. Delete the ones you don't need. I am betting that you are creating rather than reusing virtual devices for your displays.

Thanks azohawk. Yes I have run your command and there are more then 100 virtual devices. Now what should I do. I mean how I can set a virtual device for reuse? thanks again

Likely you'll find most of the devices are varied off.  Vary them on & they will become available.

Write a program to vary on the devices. Output a file of the device descriptions and select those that are varied off to vary on.
See if the vary on command can be generic.
Run it once a eweek from the job scheduler.
    good luck

Yes I have deleted unnecessary device descriptions but today again few new devices appeared.remaining were in varied off mode. Should I manually handle them every time?As Bob suggested I can get list of all varied off devices from this command WRKCFGSTS CFGTYPE(*DEV) CFGD(*DSP) STATUS(*VARYOFF). How I can output a list of these devices to a file. Second question is if I put this command to my start up command then how is that?

You don't need to use a file if you don't want.  I've a program that uses the QUSLOBJ API to retrieve devices into a user space then processes through that to identify and attempt to vary on display devices.

At our place we have a CL program that Varies Off unused devices and than deletes them making room for new device descriptions.
It uses 2 CL commands :
    VRYCFG CFGOBJ(QPADEV*) CFGTYPE(*DEV) STATUS(*OFF)
    MONMSG MSGID(CPF2640)
    DLTDEVD    DEVD(QPADEV*)
    MONMSG     MSGID(CPF2117)

I am assuming your devices are named QPADEVxxxx

    Thanks pdraebel

Can I add this command to startup?

No problem adding that to the startup procedure. At our shop we run this as part of Backup-End of day processing.
