DVD drive tray height

Intel PC hardware

I want to replace an HP CD-ROM with a DVD burner. I bought a Sony, replaced the system cover, and the tray wouldn't open because it bumped into the front panel drive flap assembly. The HP drive trays have an 18mm (3/4") front opening. The Sony was 21mm (7/8"). I returned the new drive and inquired about a Cyberhome on the shelf. It was 20mm.

I searched high and low for further info. Nobody is talking about this issue. No manufacturer lists its drive tray heights.

If no one else has any experience with this the bottom line is replace with another HP product or file down the front face plate of another brand's tray. Of course, HP has very good products, but I don't appreciate forced "customer loyalty" by resizing supposedly standard components.

Thank you in advance for any help you might offer.

Try going to www.TigerDirect.com. They will carry the brand you are looking for or don't put the cover back on. Look for a larger cover from another case in a computer store.

I’m not sure if I have a clear picture, but from what I can discern:

Have you tried moving the drive to a lower bay?
