 DVD Burner Problem

Hello, I have an issue i never ran into before. I have a brand new CD/DVD burner that will burn CDs but not DVDs. It is a LG GSA-4160B (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4160B in windows). Now i already updated the firmware to the latest version (406a) to no prevail. And the strangest thing is if you have a blank DVD in the drive it hoses up the computer! If i click on Nero (came with drive) it starts to open then freezes...can't even end task until i take out the blank. This drive is installed on a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise machine w/P4 2.4GHz Processor and a Gig of RAM. If you leave a blank DVD in the drive and reboot...the server won't even POST. The media i had to use is a brand new Imation DVD-RW. Now i tried a Imation CD-R and the computer and Nero backup ran perfect. The problem is the folders i have to backup is 3.45Gig so i would much like the DVDs to work :). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jerry

Make sure that the burner and the burner software are properly working. Also, make sure that you have installed the driver of the burner software properly and completely.

My experience with Roxio is that it panics when media is available but can’t be properly read. That burner is very picky about media, with a definite Verbatum slant. Go to http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=11079&PageId=10 and you will see what media works with that burner. Imation doesn’t make the cut for DVD-RW. Hope this helps.

Sorry, left this out of first post. It is not uncommon for a DVD burner to hang if it can’t properly identify the media in the drive. This will cause the POST to hang while the drive is attemmpting to identify the media if your system is set to boot from the CD/DVD drive first. I had this problem when I had a bad dvd (failed burn) that I left in my drive (LITEON).

YodaTech offered some sage advice which should be tried first after which I can offer some additional steps.

1. I’ve seen this before in both misconfigured and DOA drives. My suggestion is to try these remaining ideas out before swapping the device into another machine for testing and if it misbehaves in that system, RMA the thing.

a) Make sure that you have the device solo as master on the secondary chain and use one of the high speed dma 100 or dma 133 cables. Newer srives support DMA and you have to use the newer cables. If it fails try using cable select option.
b) Make sure the IDE controller driver is compatible and set to busmastering. Possibly roll-back the driver, use the Microsoft default….some ide controller drivers are incompatable with certain drives. Had that issue with NForce NVidia board drivers and had to resort to the Microsoft standard drivers.

If you havent solved this problem yet, then try this

1- Remove the driver for your device, make sure you remove every entry of the driver previous installed, Reboot without any driver so windows can manage it self without a driver then reinstall it.

2- dont let any media inside untill u r sure it working properly.

3- try to check it with other brand DVD Media.

4- Read the Manufacuturer guide to check if it suppoer + and – DVD media. ( Most probably this can be the Reason) if it doesnt support then check which is suitable for you.

5- In the end if still doesnt works i m sure u can claim the warrany.

Write here what ever u find the solution for the future if anybody faces the same problem.
