 Duplicate email issues
I am having trouble with intermittently, receiving duplicate copies of the same email from our hosted POP3/SMTP web mail. Internally, we use Windows Server 2003, our workstations run Windows XP SP2, our firewall is a Sonicwall 2040 with McAfee's Gateway Antivirus and workstation solution . The workstations have either Microsoft Outlook 2000 or 2003 for the mail handling client. Both receive the intermittent duplicate mail. By default Microsoft Outlook sends a request back to the Web hosted email server to delete the just received downloaded email. I believe the request to delete the just received message is being interrupted somehow and the server thinks it needs to send that message again. How do I determine if the problem is my internal network, our ISP(Time Warner), or the web mail host server? Is there a way to trace the Microsoft Outlook request to delete the received messages?

Answer Wiki:
Hi I'd suggest performing a message track on your internal server, this will indicate if you are receiving 2 messages, if so it may be your firewall/antivirus solution is duplicating the message which I have seen before although not necessarily with the ones you have. If the outlook client sends the reply direct to the ISP then there's no way you can track that message on your internal Exchange server, the best way to verify the response gets to the ISP would be to ask them to track for any system messages coming from your hosts. keep us updated Mike
