My Linksys WPC54-something or another (can't recall the model right now) uses a bc43* driver, so there has been some progress of getting Linksys devices working without ndiswrapper. It took me running some special installation on my openSUSE 11.2 box to get it to download the bcm43 firmware driver, since they evidently could not distribute it in the stock install, and it was not in yast for install either.

Maybe Ubuntu distributes it in Synaptics, but I don't know.

In most cases you will be looking for some form of Realtek chipset (used largly by 3rd party network devices) For Linux this would be in the vicinity of RTL81** and so on. If my memory serves, which isn't always, Linksys uses proprietary, so ndiswrapper would be required. Hope this helps.

Check in the Synaptics manager in Administration. Make sure you have necessary repositories activated. Then you should be able to search for ndiswrapper there.
Specifically if you can find out what chipset is used on your device, it can make locating a proper linux driver a little quicker. Ndiswrapper isn't always the best solution depending on hardware.

The Windows driver will not work on Ubuntu. You need a linux driver.
Try going to the manufacturer site, to see if they offer a linux driver for the card.
