Before installation/un-installation of LN it's better to take back up in the other/external drive. Only copy the data folder from Lotus Notes folder and copy it to the other drive.
Bcoz there is only five files are important while upgrading your LN.
1. archive folder
2. names.nsf
3. bookmark.nsf
4. desktop.ndk
5. .id file
All these are available in data folder. After copying the same uninstall the Old Version LN and install the same. After installation replace the above file with the newly installed LN. Best Regards "Mann"

We don’t know which parts of the upgrade instructions apply to you, so we’d have to copy all of it here. The instructions are already available at Upgrade Central: Planning your upgrade to Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5.x. There are many possible paths through there, but only you know which steps fit your environment. — Tom

If the user took advantage of the Personal Journal or customized the dictionary, you’ll want those files, too.
