Domino server won't run compact task

Domino 5, Domino server

We're running a Domino 5 environment and one of our servers fails to run the compact task in the evening. I have tried scheduling it at a different time and with different parameters (-S 5 and -B). The notes log will show the compact task launching and compacting mail.box but nothing else. Any clues on what might be wrong?

David, what is the exact Domino server version and what OS platform is it running on? What happens if you manually issue the compact command at the server console?
