I created a separate directory for deleted users and aliases and merge that to a condensed directory catalog, which is placed, on my external mx servers. I do use group docs in case the entries need to route to more than one user. The mx server uses the condensed dir catalog for mail routing. This keeps my Primary directory clean of unnecessary entries. Basically I got tired of answering my bosses questions about why is so and so still in the directory when he was fired last week!!!

You can also use a group document if you would like to forward a deleted user's mail to more than one person. This is helpful for a customer service type role or one where you would like multiple people to receive the message. Just put the deleted users e-mail address in the 'internet address' field of the group document and the list of users you want to receive mail in the 'members' field.
