Here is the SMTP conversation with their server .... 220 mail1.mailserver.com.au ESMTP server ready on Wed, 14 Dec 2005 15:10:40 +1100 helo 250 mail1.mailserver.com.au Hello [1xx.1xx.1xx.xx] mail from : my.sender@mydomain.com.au 250 2.1.0 my.sender@mydomain.com.au....Sender OK rcpt to : recipient@theirdomain.net 550 5.2.1 Mailbox unavailable. HELO/EHLO domain "" is rejected. Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

From the error mesage it seems that message is rejected because of an empty HELO/EHLO domain. I would try configuring/using this and then doublecheck to see if the error was still there.

Sorry , the reason the domain is empty is because when I did the SMTP telnet I didn't specify a computer name in the HELO string. If I include the mail server name then the NDR includes the domain in brackets ... 550 5.2.1 Mailbox unavailable. HELO/EHLO domain "Mymailserver.internal.domain" is rejected.

Well to options to go on: Check with the other company that they are not filtering out your "bad" sender. Another option - Increase logging on your mailserver to pin out the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion - it does appear to be a problem with the other ISP - apparently they were dropping mail from other companies as well. Quite a weird one though ! If I find out exactly what is was from them I'll let you all know. Thanks again. SS
