A buzz is stirring through enterprises as they decide whether to use social media analytics. While it provides a lower-cost alternative with instantaneous feedback on different data services, many businesses are wondering if this is the right time to jump on the bandwagon. I see many organizations that do not. From an IT and security perspective this could be a bad idea. There's a lot of positives that can come from social media in terms of marketing and competitive advantage, but also a lot of negatives in terms of information risk.

Any company engaging in social media should be using some form of social analytics. If you’re going to invest your time, you need to know what kind of return you are seeing from it and understand what type of material is of most interest to your user base. If you’re not tracking results, you’re basically throwing your time and money away.
