The question is should we or should we rely solely on Windows 8 own virus control?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I suggest using an external antivirus for better protection. You can use AVG Free which is what i use and recommend. Download AVG Free Edition

Given Microsoft's track record I have always gone outside for virus protection. That's just my opinion. The main reason is other sources seem to update their databases more frequently.

If u rely on in-built anti virus program of any OS, u have to go for OS  hardening  & some manual intervention is necessary, while if u install external anti virus program, it will do every prevention for ur OS. Of course prise is matter here!

I would also recommend a third party anti-virus.

Options could vary depending on whether this is for an organization or a personal/home computer.

There are some very good free options, that would offer basic protection (AVG being my favorite).

As Mr. Carlosdl suggested for a good anti virus, which is OK, but if u do not want to install an external anti virus progs, u can go for MWAV toolkit which is completely free and not require to install. It's just scan ur pc as an emergency basis & clean if there is any virus/spywares (options are there). But run this software in safe mode, which is more effective & u can dnld from net (size is 206 mb latest, 14.0.139).

Absolutely not! Windows 8 has improved malware protection but it's no substitution for full-fledged protection like I wrote about here.
