If I am behind a router that I don't control, is a VPN a solution to have access to all ports I might want? Does it expose me directly to the internet?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

When you say a router you don’t control, do you mean a bridged router or a firewall router?  If its a firewall router, you have to have some control or your VPN will not work.  VPN is the best way to lower your exposure to the internet.
