"Companies that don't embrace this are going to get left behind." Those are the words of Gary Moore, COO of Cisco Systems, on the company's new 'Internet of Things' business unit, which was unveiled to the press at this week's Cisco Live conference. The unit will consist of several different initiatives within Cisco that emerged to serve vertical markets (transportation, manufacturing, smart cities). Do you believe in the 'Internet of Things' business unit?

I believe that somebody better come up with something that's fairly comprehensive that can help with standards at the very least. 'Things' are going to be joining networks whether we expect it or not, and it's going to be an IPv6 internet that enables it. . It will be necessary to check many electrical, or electronic, items to determine if networking capabilities exist. . Tom

I suspect this is the direction we're headed. Knowing what I know about business, Mr. Moore and Cisco may be a bit ahead of their time though.
