I have a simple AD setup w/ 2003 running DHCP and DNS. I have another server on the same network that has a static IP address. The name of the server is meaningful to our IT people but not so much to our uses. I am trying to add an alias entry to DNS so users can navigate the shares using a simple name like \file instead of the long confusing computer name.
I am able to browse to the machine using \computerName and \ipAddress. However if I add either an ARecord or CRecord (tried both), I am able to ping and get a correct ip address, but if i try browsing \newAliasName it cannot find the target. I suspect that I am not grasping what is going on here.
Is there a way to create an alternate name in DNS to point to the same server?
