In winXP with older computers, Whidnows Defender is the most likely culprit for this problem. When the computer is booting into Windows, anything which causes a delay in Defender loading will make it flash that error message. IF that is the case, just click on your defender icon and it will give you a dialogue box telling you that defender did NOT start, and to click on the link in the box to start and open defender. Once it opens it is advisable to “Update and Run Defender” because at this point you haven’t a clue as to when the last time defender ran was. Although it does tell you on the bottom of the defender when that was, and IF it was too lonag ago, the Defender’s page will be a sort of weird orangish yellow, and green if all is okay.

If your event log is not giving helpful information, there is a link to view details of the report asking to be sent. You might also look in that to see if there are any words or filenames you recognize.

Can you give any more details? XP SP2, SP3? Here is an article to show you how you can disable the popups from happening but in the long run I'm not sure if this would do more harm then good without knowing what the real problem is. If you could post more information it would be helpful.
