This depends on what you are refering to as "lower left corner." The only one I konw of in Windows XP is the Status Bar in Windows Explorer
1. In Windows Explorer select "View"
2. Check (enable) "Status Bar."
This adds a status bar to the bottom of the Windows Explorer window which can show free space for the selected drive.
Thanks! This answers the question!
