I have sanitized the disk drives and ready to physicall remove them. I have tried device concurrent maintence to remove the disk drives, when I pull the disk drive out, it sends a critical hardware message to qsysopr message queue. IBM says that I need to power down the system then remove them. Has anyone experienced this issue? Can you suggest the best practice to remove the disk drives after sanitizing them?

Hi there,

Your question sounds fairly straightforward but there are a few important factors. How you do this depends on the following

1) Version of OS that you have on the system

2) Whether your disks are unprotected, mirrored or RAID protected.

If you can let me know these bit of info, I can advise further.

The best way to remove the hard disk drive after cleaning or sanitizing, is to carefully remove all the connected wires or cables. Remember to avoid the drive from being fallen on the ground because it could cause a hardware failure which could make it totally unusable.

Gordon, The disk drives are in a 5095 expansion unit that is used just for sanitizing disk nothing more. The disk drives are non-configured units. The OS is V6R1M0/Group SF99610-8288.

-Well I've always known to power down the system first before even removing Hard Disk. Reason for- Power is still Generating into the Disk which can be shorted when removing while power is going through... -The Disk head is stabilized when powering off.
