We have V4R5 270 model i series, when i check the disk status it shows Degraded is it required to change disk resource or replace cache battery?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

When you see the disks showing as degraded, it means that the cache battery of the raid IOA card has failed. Normally you get a warning messge phone home to IBM telling them that the cache battery is about to fail usually 90 days before it actually fails, leaving the disk associated with that RAID card degraded. You should also get another message when it actually failed. These messages are found in the WRKPRB problem logs.

I would call your CE in right away to change the cache battery which on a 270 will require an outage to the system.

Unless the system is still under appropriate (and probably expensive) maintenance, this would be a customer maintenance function. A CE can do it, but changing the battery should be expected to be 'do-it-yourself'. Tom

If you plan to change the battery yourself, saving the entire system first is highly recommended. IBM even recommends a save when their tech is doing the work. A few weeks ago IBM changed the cache battery in one of our iSeries. It is surprising how many steps he went through and the great care he exercised, expecially when handling the IOP card, such as using an anti-static pad.
