The common interpretation of DR on i5 is a failover to another i5 in the event the production system crashes. A HA software can achieve this the quickest since your data is mirrored to the failover i5. Sunguard is used but is slower and far more expensive. As mentioned it depends on your company's business requirements as to which of the several options you use. ________________________________- How do you mean? DR can be whatever it needs to be in your business environment.

Disaster Recovery can mean recovery of just the system in case the main system breaks or full disaster recovery can mean having a duplicate data center in another town, state or even country to fail over to when you loose your main data center.

It is a very wide open statement. The iSeries like any other platform has both a hardware and software component and both need to be acted upon as well as any other infrstructure like the network which in this day and age is the other 50% of the equation.

How much your company will spend on a disaster recovery solution depends on it’s need to be up and running quickly and how much data loss can it accept.

With High Availablilty, you can recover to another matching system in as little as 30 minutes, if practiced and management makes a quick decision but the cost of any HA solution is very high compared to simpley contracting for a hot site to take you nightly tapes to to restore. The business needs to look at all aspects of their business to determine the true business need.

IT usually runs the DR part of the Infrastructure recovery but business needs to bundle this in with the complete DR plan and if everything including desk space for employees, desktop/laptop computers, telephone equipment, back office applications and networking are not included in the big picture then you really do not have a full working DR plan. And like all plans must be fully tested from time to time and like all sucessful IT project must be driving by the buisness owner who is going to pay the bill.
