Now this may seem like a generic question but I'm looking for the differences between an "emulator" and a "virtual machine".

I know the basic difference between the two include an emulator is specifically used for games while virtual machines are used for operating systems. But aren't there other emulators than are used for things other than game systems?

I know the basic difference between the two include an emulator is specifically used for games...

It might help us if you could explain why you think that. It's never been true as far as I know, but you might have some specific case in mind. (That doesn't mean some machine or OS "emulator" can't be used for gaming; it's just that that wouldn't be an original purpose for the concept. It'd actually be a pretty late afterthought by someone.)
