Difference in Switches: Linksys and Alcatel-Lucent
I need to set up a network with over 100 workstations. When I asked 2 vendors (Alcatel-Lucent and Linksys), both provided the switches I wanted, but the price difference is huge. Thinking positively, there must be something that makes the price differs a lot. But what? What is the consequences if I use a cheaper alternative? What is the threshold when to use the cheaper one and when to use the more expensive one? Thx

Software/Hardware used:
Alcatel-Lucent, Linksys

Answer Wiki:
I think it is like buying Cisco vs no brand switch. there will be that difference there. is your switch just a normal / dumb switch or can ..? prices of switches varies depending on what it can do, like Layer 2 or Layer 3... for my side we use cheaper switches to connect all the pc's together and so far there isn't any problem with it yet. ---------------------- I prefer to know that I have a quality product that comes with world-class tech support if needed.. If the Cisco enterprise devices (1841, 2960's, etc) are way too pricey, then I'd look into the Cisco Small business devices ( the RV082, WRVS4400n routers or the SLM-series, SF/G300 switches) - all come with Cisco-level support and cost alot less, but still allow you to do a great deal of the "regular" IOS device functions.. It boils down to what you need, how much you want to invest, and what kind of support you're looing for - just keep in mind, you get what you pay for...
