You appear not to have read the comment that I was referring to. That comment explicitly excluded the BRMS extended parameters. Without those, the BRMS elements that you are describing can generally be worthless.

Before BRMS can be installed, the Media and Storage Extension OS option must already be installed. With that option, it’s not that difficult to code against facilities such as the Tape Management Exit Program to start tracking tapes.

An organization large enough to require tracking a large number of tapes is conceivably large enough to have developers, perhaps many of them. It wouldn’t make a lot of sense to create every option that BRMS can provide, but most sites never use all of BRMS. (Most sites never even know all of the features that are available.) Creating a basic tracking system, though, is pretty easy. Perhaps even easier than learning how to really use BRMS.

Regardless, dropping the extra BRMS parameters from the comparison changes the whole question. It pretty much removes “BRMS” entirely.

Hi,In my opinion Tom went too
far with sentence: “… things that BRMS is used for can be done without
BRMS, though it requires programming of course” I am afraid, Tom, you are going
to say the same about OS/400. We need just LIC and some additional development.
Dinnu, if you work for organizations
for which you have to have a lot of backup tapes, like insurance company, you
definitely need OS/400 and some development, so buy BRMS. One of the reasons is
tape history. If you do backups using BRMS (use control groups not just
savobjbrm) I can come to your machine and tell you what can be restore from
which tapes and what you should backup but you don’t. Your organization less depends on someone’s mistake. It is no big difference between savobj and savobjbrm but it make difference having or not BRMS.I do not work for IBM :)RegardsCezary Opacki

I agree with your comment, but I’m not sure how that fits with the question that asked “other than BRMS parameters”. If you take away the BRMS parameters, the BRMS advantages mostly disappear. (Further, most things that BRMS is used for can be done without BRMS, though it requires programming of course.)

In my opinion, the main advantage of using BRMS is that it keeps track of what was saved and where it was saved. It also offers very good recovery possibilities.

What does the help text show differently between the two commands (other than for the BRMS parameters)?

Since that’s where I’d look to find out, it’s easiest just to tell you what I’d do.

SAVOBJ is a base system command. SAVOBJBRM is SAVOBJ using BRMS, therefore requiring BRMS to be installed and active. Tom.
