If you functions of layer 2 & layer 3, you can get answers easily. There are several differences are there. The main function of a layer 2 is to help the traffic from devices within a LAN. Layer2 switch does this by keeping a table of all the mac addresses & what physical port they can be found on. But when it is needed that, traffic to cross between LANs then layer 3 switch can work. The most common layer3 switch is used in a network is the router. The layer 3 switch functionally exists somewhere between being a layer2 switch and being a gateway router.
