DHCP sever and how it work with ip phone

Iam i right in saying you alot of ip phone ask the dhcp sever for a address when there started up -- cant they just has a static address allocated to each handset on a vlan

You can reserve a DHCP address for a phone but I don’t think you can set a fixed IP on a IP phone (at least the Cisco ones I have worked with). They don’t have any means of keeping the IP address in NVRAM since they rely on POE for power. There are also other parameters that DHCP offers such as the TFTP server for the phone config, etc.

****There is one way that you can try; When you go to the properties of the scope, Set the lease duration to unlimited. This might act as a workaround *****

    Actually, I work very little with Cisco IP phones, our service is hosted, so I don't deal too much with them, just simple tech support, but or phones Cisco 7960 series, do have all their configurations set statically, IP settings even the TFTP settings, and also have another site that uses DHCP to get the info, but at least, sorry that I cannot really give you info on how it is done, but at least know that it can be done.     Thanks for the additional advice! Not sure why someone wouldn't use a DHCP server for central management of these types of devices but some companies may not have that service available.
