DFS replication problems & unable to add target through DFS manager (Win2003)
When attempting to add a target through DFS manager in Windows 2003, we are receiving the following error: "In order for <servernamepath> to join replication, file replication service on <server> needs to be configured as auto-start and running. The error listed below occurred during the configuration process. You can manually finish the configuration by clicking "yes", or click "no" to re-configure. Error: RPC server unavailable". We have gone onto the server that we are trying to add and have verified that FRS is running and is set to automatic. DFS has not been replicating properly between targets for approximately 2 weeks now, and one of the targets we originally had mapped disappeared. Any suggestions or guidance would be most appreciated. Thanks to all who respond.

Answer Wiki:
Have there been any entries in the event logs pertaining to the problem? Have you tried creating another target to another server to see if the connection and replication occurrs?

Sounds like a DNS/connectivity error. Had the same problem with FRS for Active directory where one domain controller would not resolve names or site data from within Windows. Even after I set the bridgehead servers. Lot of weird things went on in the AD. Check AD replication with replmon to see if you don’t have a deaf DC.

I had a similar problem in a win2k environment. I tried using replmon, repadmin, and ntfrs.jdb? (my notes and memory are a little fuzzy). It turned out that the sysvol folder on one server was missing permissions. I added domain and enterprise administrators, and gave them full control. Problem solved.
However, I still have not determined the cause of the permissions lose.
