Detecting SQL Server 2008 R2 on Windows

Now this may seem like a simple question, but I'm looking to detect SQL Server 2008 R2 on different versions of Windows. Here are the ways I've come up with:
  • Via registry
  • Via file system
  • Via installer exit code
Which way would be the easiest?
