Defragmentation of Exchange Database using Exchange 2003 SP2 standard edition

Hi, I want to do defragmentation of Exchange Database because It is the exchange 2003 standard edition and now the database size quickly increase.But I don't know how long it will take to do offline defragmentation.I already updated to SP2.But the database size is now nearly 60 GB.

You first need to figure out why your information store is growing so rapidly. Have you check mailbox sizes in System Manager? Keep in mind that to do a proper defrag on the information store you will need to take it offline. Online defrag will not change the size of the database.

you should do a defragmentation on the exchange db. everything the user does on his mailbox is registered there (deletion, addition) until you do the defrag.
and edit the exchange registry to allow larger db (75 GB) on exchange standard.

The time it takes to do your offline defragmentation depends on the resources of the server as well as the size of the database.
Make sure you have enough disk space to do the defrag as it creates a temp database file.
The article referred to by Lord Valdemort is excellent. I would give yourself at least a couple of hours minimum per database for the defrag. I’ve had larger databases defrag in an hour and change, but then I don’t know the spec of your server so the more time you allow for, the better.
