Decrypt EFS File without Key

EFS, Encryption, Deep Freeze

Good morning,
We have run into a situation with one our users. They created an encrypted EFS file on their laptop and when they returned to the office they were unable to open it. When I looked for the cert, it was not there. Tried to reinstall the cert. that we had backed up, but it will not open the file. We have Deep Freeze installed on all laptops, does this have anything to do with it? Is there a way to open the file without the EFS cert.

Thanks,
Juan

Have you tried to un-install Deep Freeze temporarily and see if that solves the problem, was the users password changed by an administrator for any reason, that would cause the problem wit EFS not working.

Hope this helps.

Going forward, be sure to export and password protect the EFS private key, and store in a safe place. The next time Deep Freeze puts a computer back to its base configuration, you can import the private key, and decrypt the EFS files.
