I want to de-duplicate are CIFS volume, are VMWare volume and possibly are SAP volume. so is their somone that dit it and can share is expériance, and the vendor and technology he used.

We've implemented de-dup on primary storage using NetApp technology, works pretty well, but you have to be selective about the volumes you target. There seems to be a small overhead in performance, about 3% from what we've tested so far, but this has not been noticeable to end-users.

The CIFS volumes work pretty well if it's unstructured data, I've not tried SAP, but suspect that since the data is structured you may not have quite the success, and since SAP may require higher performance I'd tend to avoid it

Using Netapp filers you must be sure that you are on a Data Ontap version that supports it. Only newer versions do and depending on the filer size the volume that can be deduped is limited in size. For example our 3040 filer can only dedup volumes smaller than 3TB.

We have a N6070 but we did not buy the microcode for the bit-by-bit de-duplication. We don’t have File systems biger than 3To. but we do have near 1 PB of data.

Thank you for your reply.

I show that the FAS6070 can do dedups on volumes up to 14TB in size. Check with your contacts but at least a while ago the A-sis dedup was a free add on license. You could get it and try a volume or two to see how it works for you.

The IBM products are relabled Netapps I belive. See if you can work something out.
