The short answer is yes, but for safty you should put some form of current limiting on this, incase the unit is capable of demanding more. It very much depends on what the unit is.
Also note that 'ordinary' cells deliver 1.5v, rechargables usually only deliver 1.2v so using these will probably give only 9.6v for 8 cells, and you may need 10 cells to get the full 12v.
