 DBA:DB ratio
DBA
Test, but useful, question: How many DBAs and databases do you have at your organization? We have 160 oracle databases, across 105 servers, supported by 4 dbas. (We actually have more databases, but some are not supported by the Oracle DBAs.) Thanks, Carolyn

Answer Wiki:
We have over 300 Oracle databases currently functioning across multiple business units. The number of hands-on DBA's is not known to me other than the one central contact who manages this function. We are in the process of negotiating the acquisition and implementation of the Oracle 11i SCM suite for one of the BU's which will be the pilot for the company, and I am currently focused on that endeavor.

We have 10 relational databases (SQL Server) and 600 Lotus NOtes databases. We have no DBAs.

It depends upon how business critical these databases are, as to how many administrators one wants per DB. I’ve seen places with 1 DBA to 20 large Databases all the way to 1 DBA per DB. It depends if the DBA is narrowly focused on classic DBA tasks, such as tuning, performance, and basic administration; or more development oriented; standard DBA plus sql tuning, architecting schema. The latter will result in a lower ratio of DBAs to DBs.
