Are you asking about high availability (clustering) and disaster recovery?

For local HA you have Windows Clustering which can provide you with almost instant system recovery in the event of a OS or hardware failure at your local site.

For DR you have Database Mirroring, Log Shipping or Replication all of which can be used to copy the database in real time (or very close to it) from your primary site to your backup site giving you the ability to bring the backup database server online within minutes with little to no data loss.
