The importance of data mining varies greatly. It depends on the applications it is being used for and the data being mined.

The overall purpose is to analyze data, find trends, predict outcomes.

Search engines even use "data mining" by looking at data trends and forecasting future prices or data behavior.

I recently posted chapter excerpts from the book ‘Data Mining: Know it All’. It gives a nice overall view of what data mining is and some great examples. It might be a good place to start to get an idea of the importance of data mining and how it all works.
