Q:
Data Migration Project
Hi,

I would like to know the difficulties involved in a data migration project (migrating from AS/400 to Oracle). Can somebody give me an example of a data migration project if someone has worked on a similar project.

I know this post is over 2 years old, and the question is probably moot by now, but I would be interested in hearing how this went. I have heard all kinds of horror stories describing such things as going millions of dollars over budget, having to abandoning the project half way through because Oracle lacked needed functionality, and having an AS400 somewhere in the back to feed data to Oracle because it can't do all that the consultants claimed it could.

No, I can’t offer much. The last time I was involved in an outgoing migration was for a S/38 being migrated to DEC equipment. Actual migration of data wasn’t that big of a problem — data is data, and the data descriptions are where it’s at. But migrating the apps…?

There are quirks in every platform. One quirk that is under-appreciated by i5/OS app developers is subfiles. Interactive apps that make significant use of subfiles can be very difficult getting implemented on a lot of other platforms.

Data? If you can describe it in SQL, it’s no big deal. But the apps themselves, that can be very tricky. Users can really get familiar with “how things work”.
