What is the best practice for data encryption? We use wifi and sometimes connect to unsecured networks. How can we use free encryption technology to keep our data safe from prying eyes? Even if someone gets our data I want it to be useless.

as paranoid IT/Network Security I would never ever connect to unsecured networks…
mouse always get free cheese in the mouse trap…
when I travel – I never check my email via
unsecure networks connection
I do prefer to pay for access to secure network/internet connection…
my best practice for data encryption – better be safe than sorry…
paying few dollars for the few hours of secure network/internet connection
would save me time/money on the long run…
maybe it just me :)

I’m not paranoid, my data doesn’t interest Al Quaida or the Pentagone… I just make sure to use a bit more security then the average… so that the russian thief don’t stay long to attack my computer and prefer to attack another person with a wep, a unsecured operating system outdated, or a crack with some nice virus to execute any software. People don’t realize how works internet they think it works like a TV (using more the downloading than the uploading) so they don’t understand how it hackers attacks machines… (obviously even Warner Bros when you look at their film: you see the screen becoming black and having a phrase saying $1000000000 or I’ll destroy the world)

I’m not a IT man (not even my closest friends) but I’m concern about the open source community that’s why I use GNU/Linux… It’s true that some stuff are annoying or very different… (incompatibility…) but some stuff are great!!! And so I’ve got user/admin GUI which makes it quiet easy to administrate.
