Do you have experience in doing data conversion? How to ensure data integrity for conversion?

Ensuring integrity of your data is a BIG job during any sort of conversion. Converting from one structure to another, from one RDBMS to another, from some sort of flat data store to an RDBMS,…

Let’s say you are converting from some non-RDBMS data store to an RDBMS. In the RDBMS you would want to use columns defined as DATE to store dates. But in the data you are converting from, maybe date fields were defines as CHARACTER or even NUMERIC, but there could well be invalid dates in your data. How will you handle them? Make invalid dates NULL? Research every one to find the correct value?

Ensuring that PK / FK relationships are valid can be even more challenging. Using the example above but change it to something more important like EMPLOYEE ID. If that is your PK or FK, then the NULL approach won’t work.

Even something like mailing address can create problems. Maybe on the old system, the mailing address is actually stored in several different records. (Maybe once on the pay roll file, and again on the benefits file, and maybe even on the birthday list.) If you really are doing a data conversion, you probably want to end up with one address. Which one of the three I listed is the “correct” one?

and on and on and on and on …

Plan on spending a long time on data analysis before you even begin the long task of converting.
