I would say yes, depending on the company.
Microsoft didn't do so hot with Windows ME, but they recovered and the next OS that the released (Windows XP) outsold everything prior.
For other companies it's probably not so easy, or quick, but yes I think that recovery is possible provided that the next release is rock solid.
