On a windows 2008 ad network how do we create a backup dns server? Can we have it answer queries automatically if the first one is not available? Is replication automatic?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Install another domain controller. Add the DNS service to it. If your DNS zones are AD zones then they will replicate automatically. Setup the clients and other servers with both DNS servers IP Addresses as their DNS servers. If the first one listed isn’t available then the second one will be tried.

I agree with Mrdenny. Though u may check the followings.... Try to use a new server as second DC/DNS to install Windows server 2008. Don't go for upgrades even supported, because Windows server 2008 has complete different OS architecture than Windows server 2003. If possible go for a fresh installed Windows server 2008 and promote this one to DC, make it DNS server and Global catalog etc. and then reconfigure all domain machines to use it. It is safer to check the server, Open DNS management console and check that running Active directory integrated zone. From command line, run replmon, dcdiag and netdiag to check for errors. Thanks--
