Zoning is when you tell the fibre switch what port on the server can talk to which ports on the storage array.
Actually, most current SAN Fiber switches and directors support, and recommend, zoning based upon WWPN of the connected systems. Usually, zoning is setup with a single initiator and one or more targets. Most best practices recommend single initiator/single target zoning. Nodes can communicate or ‘see’ other nodes within their zones. Zoning is used to control what devices can communicate with each other.
