We have an XP SP3 user with a corrupt profile. When logging in to it you get a blank desktop. When copying the files to another profile it works. What should I do? Will it be corrupted as well? What causes profile corruption?

This happens fairly frequently in our organization. It’s not a tragedy. What we do is log onto the machine as a desktop admin, rename the old profile to .old or something, then have the user log back in and this creates a new profile. The last step of course is copying out all the files from the old profile to the new one which is why we do not delete the old profile first.

I would personally save the info which is in the uncorrupted profile, (assuming it is for the same user) then I would delete that pprofile, and to insure the likelyhood of the new profile working correctly, I would modify the profile name by one or two characters so the db for the profiles does not try and resurrect the original profile, and see how that works out. Remember, back up, back up, back up!
