Q:
Corrupt of Missing System file
Hi everyone. We had a remote user whose laptop shutdown on her while working on emails and when it restarted it gave the following message:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system

We set up a new laptop for her and swapped it out. 20 minutes into working on emails, it did it again. This was a good clean laptop that we have been using and had nothing wrong with it. It has Windows XP SP3 and MS Office 2003 for Outlook. Any ideas to why this happened to her twice would be extremely appreciated.

Thank you.

You can use the Abit KT7A-Raid with bios 'ZT', ,the best bios, newer versions can cause many errors. If you don't have the KT7A-Raid then you can look at your motherboard's manufacturer website for the new bios.

to resolve your problem, you can try the following,

Boot with the CD then run the recovery console, choose your windows setup to repair.

After that type the following exactly,

cd system32\config (Press Enter)
ren system system.old (Press Enter)
ren system.alt systemalt.old (Press Enter)
copy c:\windows\repair\system (Press Enter)
copy c:\windows\repair\regback\system (Press Enter)

After this has been done, rebootthe system, even if some of the above files cannot be found. This may not always work, but it's worth a try.

The first thing that comes to mind, is a virus infection.
Maybe the user is opening e-mails attachments indiscriminately.

Carlosdl is probably right. Thats the only thing I can think of if she is just working with her email.

It is diffidently a virus infection that why your computer system files has corrupted and not searching by your operating system anymore.

You should have to do two things to repair it:

First :- Run the “sfc /scannow” command to repaire your operating system files.

Second : - Scan your computer with good antivirus like Norton, Macfee, AGV etc..
