Copying from AS/400 to Excel

I have a user who copies data from the AS/400 to an Excel spreadsheet. After copying for approximately 10 to 15 minutes the function no longer works. There is nothing placed in the clipboard and nothing gets copied to the spreadsheet. If I open another document - such as Word, while the other programs are still running - and copy data from one page to another it still works - data even shows up on the clipboard viewer. The only way to get it to work again is to shut down the AS/400 connecton and close Excel and then go back in again. I have removed and reloaded Client Access (Ver 5.5) but that didn't help.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Have you tried upgrading to the current version of the client software? (I think it’s 5.7 with 2 service packs) It may help – I have seen oddities with version 5.5.

There is no iSeries Access 5.5 nor 5.7 nor will there ever be. iSeries Access went from V5R1 to V5R2, V5R3, V5R4 to V6R1. Pcomm 5.5 was in either iSeries Access V5R1 or V5R2. Whichever is the correct version/release — V5R1 or V5R2 — you’ll want to verify that the latest service pack is on the PC.

Try the <a href=”http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/i/software/access/windows/casp.html#whatspcurrent”>IBM i Access for Windows Service Packs</a> web page.

Unfortunately I have to stick with the corporate version which is currently 5.5. It was working okay until his system crashed and we had to do a rebuild on it.

OK, that's a bummer. Have you tried copying the excel plug-in from a different machine and then re-adding it into excel? (might want to remove it first though) Other things to make sure is that the service packs on office are the same as before, maybe the old machine had a different patch level on office or even the os. You could also have them try a different computer. Lastly, make sure it's not something they are doing (I know we all hate the watch and see what the customer is doing, but sometimes it gives you the answer). I'll keep thinking.... Lirria

I take it you using Client Access to Download a physical file into an excel spreadsheet and you identified the correct file type to download If thats the case the size of the file you are donloading can be a factor. I seem to recall Excel having a 10,000 record limit on downloads..Hope this helps.

Excel will only hold 65,536 records so if you are going over that number that could be the problem. Is there any way to split the files up on the 400 side into smaller files and have several downloads instead of one large one?

I don't believe the number of entries is the problem as he was able to do this prior to his system crashing with no problems. And he doesn't copy over that much data anyway. He is just doing a copy and paste from one to the other.

it sounds like you might want to use iSeries/Access ODBC driver to get external (AS400) data into your XL sheets... I guess you are using the iSeries Access screen emulator to cut from??? Seems pretty barbaric to me, so I don't know if many people have done a lot of this over a 20 minute period as your user does... I personally have had some trouble cutting and pasting from many nonMS programs into XL and other MS programs....

I frequently move data created by Query on iSeries side to a Windows folder. I use Version 5 Release 2 of iSeries Access for Windows. The data transfer method from host to client brings up a new window. When I setup the PC side, I go to the file details window, and I use the comma separated option in File Type. This file can then be imported to an Excel spreadsheet and the comma's separate the fields into separate columns.

I have been using the Client Access plugin (Transfer Data from Iseries) for several years now to do this type of work. It works without a hitch and is very fast(even on large files). You have to specifically load the plugin during install or you can load it afterwards. It does not automatically install.

One of the behaviors of Excel and other MS products (I believe even non MS Windows applications, too) is that they open a temporary copy of the file. All edits (this includes pastes) are kept track of in the temporary environment in a sort of 'changes made' table. When this table becomes full (not necessarily by the amount of data but the number of changes), it is no longer able to accept entries. The easiest way to clear this up is to save the spreadsheet, close the file and then re-open it. Your user should then be able to continue where he left off. (this should work without touching the AS400 side. another nice thing is that Excel usually opens to where the last edits were made). I hope that this is helpful. Gregg
