Answer Wiki:
How many programs do you have to convert? How soon do you need them done? I have 5250 emulation and can do it from my home. What's your budget? I can do it by program, lines of code, by the hour, or flat fee. Mary.... 8)

The primary difficulty in conversion concerns the creation of the external descriptions of the database. In particular you have to determine how to handle the multi-format files that are rife in S/36 style applications.

I know that Linoma (www.linomasoftware.com) markets an S/36 conversion utility – but I’m not sure if it handles COBOL.

Certainly at the time the 400 first came out, there were a number of tools that did conversions – but I haven’t heard of any for a long time. However, I think this will change soon due to IBM’s announcement that S/36 compilers will move to PRPQ status with the next release.
