Convert PSTN to SIP to use cell phone as cordless phone

dear All, I’m all new to VoIP and telephony in general and don't know the correct terminology...probably someone else already posted my questions in another thread but I managed to confuse the search engine with my query terms. Anyways... Basically I have a PSTN telephone line on which an ADSL modem is connected for internet. This is connected to the WAN port of a wireless router. I now bought a mobile phone (E71) with SIP functionality and would like that when I get home (in Wi-Fi range), my cell phone turns into a normal cordless phone so I can make and receive landline calls on it. I am thinking of some device that connects to my phone line and to a LAN port on the router. I could then log on it and set SIP settings...sort of a local VoIP network... Is this possible? Any ideas? Thanks!

There are such devices. They are called a PBX (Phone system) and FXO VOIP Gateways. The commerical units sell for several thousand bucks a pop. So that is not a good solution for home.
However, there are always alternatives.
Microsoft and Linksys have aninexspensive SIP PBX, and there are many linux based ones as well. With the Linux ones you will need an old PC and a PCI FXO analog card($$). Switchvox has a free PBX (LINUX) and that is what I am using at home. I got my card from NetxUSa.com.

Unfortunately It is not just a matter of converting analog to SIP. SIP is just a protocol and requres contact and authentication to allow it to function. The conversion and control happens in the PBX.
Linksys is most likely your cheapest bet. It is not too fancy and will do the basics. It is also fairily easy to configure. I cannot be certain it will work with your phone though.

Hope this helps,
Jason
